Elleven stands alone as an achievement to The South Group s longstanding commitment to building sustainably. Elleven is the first new built from the ground up residence in downtown L. in over years and was designed and constructed to require less energy and fewer natural resources. Grass also gobbles up precious water resources. Trees and shrubs are beneficial because their roots filter pollutants in the soil and stop surface erosion. Plants give us oxygen to breathe and provide habitat for wildlife. In return you enjoy healthier plants because they develop hardier roots that withstand drought disease and weeds. Call it survival of the fittest or Mother Nature s tough love. Here are some tips for green landscaping. Don t overdo it. If you must use man made fertilizer use it correctly according to label directions. Too much fertilizer harms plants over the long run. Put out welcome mat. Birds bees and butterflies need your help so give them flowering and berry producing plants for food sources. Native plants know how to deal with Mother Nature s good and bad days. Plant deciduous shade trees on the southern and western exposure! s of your home. Their foliage cools your house in the summer when the leaves fall the sun warms things up. Leaves grass clippings and other yard debris clog landfills. This so called waste contains valuable nutrients that plants crave. Shredding and turning it often speeds up the process. Good bugs often take care of bad bugs if you let them. Before you spray anything toxic remove pests by hand or with a spray of water. Use traps and barriers or remove parts or all of the infected plant. Plants are also good at dealing with a little disease so monitor their progress before spraying. Plants often die because they receive too much or too little water. com ADVERTISEMENT Popular stories Contribution real or just a tease at U.

Source: http://www.dailypress.com/features/dp-greenhyper,0,4057434.storylink

Briefs 101307 The Union

Educators nominated for teacher of the year Harvest Festival today at Yuba charter scholarship for students supporting. Planning staff worked with the city forester and local nurseries to come up with ideas for the landscaping buffer. We re recommending more plant materials and wider buffers between different land uses. The buffers we had were not quite doing the job intended Hokenstad said. We spent seven months studying this and worked with a wide variety of groups. Landscape materials would require two shade trees two ornamental trees and two large upright coniferous trees. The second part of the city staff response resulted in new setbacks for both back and side yards. Basically what this does as a building gets taller stories are added additional setback is needed. Anything above two stories each additional story requires more feet of setback. The maximum height limit in RM residential multi family zoning is feet. The new ordinances will have no! effect on existing buildings. Ordinance relating to landscaping buffer yards passed on a vote with Commissioner Dave Jensen in opposition. We just started decorating using bales of hay cornstalks mums and fall blooming perennials and shrubs. It s a great time to plant. Temperatures are cooler and there s more moisture in the air. Don t be afraid to plant just remember to keep everything watered. Holly bushes are a great addition with their colorful berries. Fall is also a great time to bolster your lawn. Follow some simple steps and you should have no problem getting grass seed to take hold. Start by digging out any unwanted grass or weeds in the area you want to seed. Take some new loam or topsoil and spread it to about thick. This will give your grass seed a nice soft section of dirt for growth. Now it s time to pick your seed . URI a seed mixture formulated by the University of Rhode Island is great for this area. Scott s and Jonathan Green also have good grass seed mixes for this a! rea. Give the grass seed some fertilizer . Scott s makes a great starter fertilizer with crabgrass preventer. This is our favorite because it will still allow your grass seed to germinate. Greenview offers a starter fertilizer that we also use on lawns. Watering is the final step of your seeding process and is usually the hardest step for most people. Don t flood your grass seed but keep it moist so it will be able to germinate. Fall doesn t mean we stop watering our plants. They may be done growing above the soil but their roots are still going strong. com Broadview Garden Center web site Share your thoughts on the above article.

Source: http://www.thewesterlysun.com/articles/2007/10/07/front_porch_news/doc46fa502f50449014826813.txt

blog recomended to read: Merildass Blog

Books with Fall Landscaping Projects BellaOnline

Here are some books that will help you plan for this new gardening season.
